The Staff
Music is notated on a staff. A staff is generally five parallel, horizontal lines grouped together.
Most instrumentalists read music off a single staff of music. However, a pianists or a vocal ensemble may require a grand staff. A grand staff is two or more staffs connected together.
However, drummers and other percussionists may have fewer lines in the staff based on how many drums are used. In the following example, there is only one drum being played and thus there is only one line needed. (Sorry for the blurriness of the picture).
If the staff provided is not enough room for the range of notes an instrument plays then ledger lines are used. Ledger lines are small lines that are added above and below the staff to increase the range of notation.
