The Anatomy of a Note
Notes are Built in a Progression
The first step is a bolded circle known as the head. This is a whole note.
The second step is adding a stem to the bolded circle. This is a half note.
The third step is filling in the circle. That is a quarter note.
Any following steps would be to add a flag. This is an eighth note.
Every time you add an additional flag, the note duration is cut in half. This is a sixteenth note.
Note that when eighth notes and sixteenth notes are next to one another in a measure the flags will be joined together to form a bar.
